OUR CALLING
A Sanctuary For Those Seeking The One
The Church of the Living Monad is a religious community grounded in the perennial truth that all consciousness emanates from a single living source — the Monad.
In an era defined by profound fragmentation, spiritual alienation, and the illusion of separation, our church stands as a sanctuary of remembrance. Through the careful, ceremonial, and deeply reverent use of sacred plant and entheogenic medicines, we offer our members a direct, unmediated path toward communion with this ultimate source. We do not ask our members to simply believe in the divine through the reading of texts or the acceptance of dogma; we provide the sacramental framework for them to experience the divine directly.
Our sanctuary is a space of profound spiritual inquiry, radical healing, and communal devotion. We are a congregation of seekers, philosophers, and mystics who believe that encountering the divine is the fundamental birthright of every human soul.
Our foundational purpose is to guide members out of the labyrinth of modern disconnection and back into the radiant presence of the Living Monad, restoring the soul’s inherent knowing.
OUR COSMOLOGY
The Living Monad and the Perennial Philosophy
At the very center of our theology is the concept of “The Monad.” Originally articulated by ancient Greek philosophers, Neoplatonists, and mystics across the ages, the Monad is the Supreme Being, the First Cause, the undivided One from which all multiplicity arises. It is the infinite white light at the center of the cosmological wheel, the silent ground of being that holds all of creation.
Our church subscribes to the Perennial Philosophy—the understanding that all of the world’s great spiritual traditions share a single, mystical origin. The rituals, names, and dogmas may change across cultures, but the underlying truth remains the same: the human soul is an emanation of the Divine, and its ultimate destiny is to return to a state of conscious unity with that Source.
The modern human condition is often characterized by a painful sense of exile. We become trapped within the narrow confines of the ego, forgetting our inherent divinity and interconnectedness with all of life. This spiritual amnesia is the root of our deepest suffering.
We believe that entheogenic sacraments are divine gifts woven into the fabric of the Earth to serve as correctives to this amnesia. They act as sacred keys, perfectly designed to temporarily dissolve the veil of the ego. In this state of expanded awareness, the practitioner is permitted to witness the interconnected web of all existence, moving beyond intellectual belief into the undeniable, felt experience of communion with the Monad. This encounter transforms the individual, leaving a permanent imprint of grace, humility, and awe.
OUR LINEAGE
The Three Pillars of Our Wisdom Tradition
Our spiritual framework does not belong to a single historical era or isolated geography. It is a living, breathing synthesis that draws upon three profound streams of human wisdom, honoring each while weaving them into a cohesive spiritual container for the modern seeker:
Indigenous Wisdom and Earth-Based Stewardship
We bow in profound gratitude to the indigenous lineages of the Americas and across the globe, who have acted as the unbroken guardians of plant medicine traditions for millennia. From the deep Amazonian basin to the high mountains and deserts, these lineage holders understood the animistic intelligence of nature long before the modern world.
They recognized that the Earth is not a dead resource to be exploited, but a living, breathing teacher. We deeply honor their songs (icaros), their rigorous ceremonial containers, and their profound relationship with the spirits of the plants. In our sanctuary, we strive to walk in the right relationship and sacred reciprocity with these ancient traditions, acknowledging that our sacraments are the inheritance of their enduring wisdom.
Mystical Christianity
We draw deeply from the contemplative, esoteric heart of the Christian tradition. Beyond the rigid dogmas of the institutional church lies a mystical path centered on radical love, forgiveness, and the realization of the “Kingdom of Heaven” that resides within. We recognize the Christ consciousness as a profound archetype of surrender, compassion, and the embodiment of the divine in human form.
This state of being is perfectly mirrored in the opening of the heart during our Cor Apertum (MDMA) sacrament, where the armor of the ego falls away to reveal a boundless capacity for grace. The writings of Christian mystics serve as a vital map for navigating the dark night of the soul and the subsequent resurrection into divine light.
Hermetic Philosophy and Alchemy
“As above, so below. As within, so without.” We embrace the Hermetic arts of spiritual alchemy—the process of transmuting the heavy, leaden aspects of our trauma, fear, and egoic conditioning into the pure gold of spiritual realization.
Hermeticism provides our community with a rigorous cosmic architecture, helping us understand the multidimensional nature of reality, the laws of vibration, and the profound esoteric truths revealed during deep sacramental journeys. By viewing the human soul as a microcosm of the divine macrocosm, we empower our members to actively participate in their own spiritual evolution.
OUR ETHOS
Stewards of the Altar, Not the Clinic
As the global narrative surrounding entheogens shifts rapidly toward the medical, clinical, and psychiatric models, the Church of the Living Monad maintains a vital, unwavering distinction:
We are not therapists, nor are we recreational guides.
We do not view these sacred medicines as “psychedelic drugs” to be synthesized for the treatment of clinical pathology, nor do we approach them as tools for casual, recreational exploration or mere entertainment. We are devoted stewards of an ancient sacramental tradition, reborn and formalized for our age.
When you enter our sanctuary, you are not entering a clinic; you are entering a temple. Our facilitators are trained pastoral guides, space holders, and lineage stewards who are present to witness and support your spiritual revelation, not licensed medical professionals treating mental illness.
While our members frequently report profound psychological, emotional, and physical healing as a byproduct of their sacramental journeys, this healing is understood as a consequence of spiritual realignment and communion with the Divine, rather than a secular medical intervention. We believe that true healing naturally follows when the soul remembers its connection to the Monad.
OUR FOUNDER
Dr. Joseph Palmeri — Founder & Organizer
Dr. Joseph Palmeri is the founder and organizer of the Church of the Living Monad, a 501(c) religious organization operating under the protections of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).
A physician and board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Palmeri completed his medical education at the University of Oklahoma and his residency in anesthesiology at NYU. He has been in active medical practice since 2012.
Alongside his career in medicine, he has spent over a decade working with sacramental plant medicines in dedicated ceremonial settings. Within the church, his practice is centered primarily on 5-MeO-DMT, alongside the careful use of psilocybin mushrooms, MDMA, hapé, and ayahuasca.
Dr. Palmeri approaches this work as a distinct calling. While his extensive medical training informs a vital understanding of the physical body and human consciousness, he maintains a deliberate boundary between his profession and his faith. He holds that the sacramental ceremony stands entirely on its own ground—intentionally separate from clinical practice, and devoted strictly to the spiritual journey.
LEGAL STANDING & SAFETY
The Sanctity of the Religious Container
At the Church of the Living Monad, we believe that profound spiritual expansion is only possible when the physical, psychological, and legal container is absolutely secure. Safety is not a mundane concern; it is the sacred foundation upon which all our work rests.
Legal Protections Under RFRA
The Church of the Living Monad is a legally recognized religious organization operating within the United States. All of our sacramental ceremonies are conducted strictly under the constitutional protections of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) of 1993.
Under RFRA, our community is federally protected in our sincere religious exercise, which places the ceremonial consumption of entheogenic sacraments at the very center of our worship. We operate in absolute transparency, adhering strictly to our established religious tenets, and ensuring that our practices are conducted exclusively within a bona fide religious context.
Rigorous Discernment and Screening
Because we operate a sacred religious sanctuary, participation is not open to the general public. Access to our sacraments is reserved exclusively for sincere, active members of our spiritual community. Every prospective member must pass through a highly structured pastoral intake and discernment process to ensure alignment with our religious values.
Furthermore, because we view the physical body as the holy vessel of the spirit, we require comprehensive, confidential medical screenings to rule out any physiological or pharmacological contraindications. We fiercely protect our altar, our lineage, and our congregation by ensuring that every participant is prepared, sincere, and physically safe to receive the sacrament.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Understanding Our Community
What is an entheogenic church?
An entheogenic church is a religious organization that utilizes entheogens (sacred plants and substances that generate the experience of the divine within) as its primary sacrament. Just as bread and wine are used in traditional Christian communion, we utilize sacraments like Psilocybin, Ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and MDMA within a strictly religious, ceremonial context to facilitate direct communion with God, or “The Monad.”
Do I have to abandon my current religion to join?
No. Because the Church of the Living Monad is grounded in the Perennial Philosophy, we believe that all true spiritual paths lead to the same ultimate source. We have members who identify as Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and secular seekers. Our sacraments often deepen a member’s understanding of their own native faith traditions by providing a direct experience of the mystical truths those traditions describe.
How do I become a member of the Church?
Membership is a deliberate and mindful process. It begins by reaching out through our Contact page to express your sincere spiritual intent. From there, prospective members engage in a discernment conversation with a church pastoral guide to ensure our sanctuary is the right fit. This is followed by a thorough medical and psychological screening to ensure physical safety before any invitation to the altar is extended.
Is your church legally protected?
Yes. We operate as a legally established religious organization under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). This federal law protects the sincere religious practices of our church, including the ceremonial use of our sacraments. We maintain this protection through meticulous adherence to our safety protocols, religious tenets, and closed-door membership requirements, ensuring that our faith is practiced with the utmost integrity.
